The history of music goes back much further than people generally think. Primitive musical instruments were also found in the same soil layer as animal bones bearing traces of man-made instruments found during the excavation carried out by scientists in the Geissenklösterle Cave in Southern Germany. The first people who came to Europe may have used the area where this cave is located. The primitive flute, found during the excavation and made of bird bones and mammoth tusks, dates back 40 thousand years and is the oldest musical instrument discovered.
