The 15th Istanbul Biennial, titled "a good neighbor", which will be held free of charge between 16 September and 12 November 2017, awaits its visitors.

The title of the biennial, determined as "a good neighbor" by the curators of the 15th Istanbul Biennial, Elmgreen & Dragset, was announced at a press conference held at Salon İKSV on the morning of December 7. The press conference began with a performance in which 40 people, ranging in age from 8 to 84, asked questions about a “good neighbor.” Following the opening speech of Istanbul Biennial Director Bige Örer, the curators of the 15th Istanbul Biennial are the artist duo Elmgreen & D.

ragset explained the title and conceptual framework of the biennial.

Speaking at the meeting, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset said, “a good neighbor will consider the concept of home from different perspectives: home, defined as a space where behavioral routines and values are formed through everyday experiences, but also a place that reveals a sense of belonging — a “rootedness” . This exhibition will explore the different lifestyles associated with private spaces and the ways we, as residents, make the most of and personalize our home spaces. “Thus, it will examine how the house can hold clues to different identities and function as a means of self-expression throughout history,” he said.

During the press conference, photographs selected by artist Ali Taptık from his different series produced in Istanbul, related to the "good neighbor" frame of Elmgreen and Dragset, were on the screen. In addition, the visuals of the outdoor promotional campaign of the 15th Istanbul Biennial, prepared by graphic designer Rupert Smyth together with many artists, were shown for the first time at the press conference. This international campaign, which will be carried out in cooperation with cultural institutions in many different places, from England to Brazil, from Germany to the USA, will underline how the concepts of home and neighborhood have changed all over the world.
